Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Shipping Community, Environmental Organizations: Cooperation for the protection of Sperm whales

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy took action to protect the endangered whales from collisions with ships passing through the Hellenic Trench, following requests from WWF Hellas, the Institute for Cetacean Research of the Aegean Sea and the Aegean Sea. (IFAW), as well as a proposal of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (NEE).Specifically, at the request of the Ministry to the Hydrographic Service of the Navy, statements were issued, which inform the seafarers about the existence of marine mammals in these areas, while drawing their attention to the detection and avoidance of collisions with these large cetaceans. In this way, the Ministry intends to protect, preserve and guarantee the survival of the whales in the Hellenic Trench, while aiming for the promotion of the environmental consciousness.Taking measures to avoid collisions between ships and marine mammals is crucial for the protection of marine endangered species in our country.WWF Hellas, the Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute and the International Fund for Animal Welfare welcome the initiative of the Ministry and NEE. Issuing action recommendations to avoid marine mammal collisions is an important step in tackling this threat. This initiative is also a promising example of good cooperation between the Ministry of Shipping, the shipping sector and environmental actors, which is expected to continue in the future.
